Taco Tuesday Turkey Tacos
Ground turkey simmered in a saucy taco filling that clings to every bite. On the table in half an hour.
- Serves 6-8 (12-16 tacos)
- Time About 30 minutes
- Made with Taco Seasoning
Ground turkey is lean and mild, so it needs a well-seasoned sauce. Frisco Taco Seasoning simmers into one that clings to the meat. Set out the toppings and let everyone build their own.
Ingredients
Serves 6-8 (12-16 tacos). Time: about 30 minutes.
- 2 lb ground turkey (93% lean works well)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- Frisco Taco Seasoning, 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup)
- 1 cup water
- 12-16 corn or flour tortillas, or taco shells
- Toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomato, shredded cheddar, sour cream, salsa, sliced jalapeno, lime wedges
Steps
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook 3-4 minutes, until it starts to soften.
- Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it up, until no pink remains and it reaches 165F, the USDA safe minimum for ground poultry.
- Sprinkle in the Taco Seasoning and stir to coat.
- Add the water, bring to a simmer, and cook 5-8 minutes, stirring now and then, until the sauce thickens and clings to the meat.
- Warm the tortillas in a dry skillet, or wrapped in foil in a 350F oven for 10 minutes.
- Set out the meat and toppings and let everyone build their own.
Why it works
Onion, garlic, and spices season lean turkey all the way through. A little food starch thickens the sauce as it simmers, so the filling stays put in the shell.
Pair it with
Drizzle a little Desert Trail Southwest Dip & Dressing over the top. Mixed as a dressing, it's a smoky, cumin-forward taco sauce.
